How to spot fake packers and movers
Simple checks that protect your belongings and your money before you book anyone.
Check who they are
- Ask for the company's GST number and check it on the official GST portal (Search Taxpayer). The name should match the company you're dealing with.
- Look for a real office address and a landline or listed business number - not just a mobile number and a website.
- Read recent reviews on Google and ask for photos of their own trucks and team at work.
Watch the quote
- A genuine mover surveys your goods (in person or on video) before quoting. Be wary of a firm price given in a 2-minute call.
- A quote far below everyone else's is a red flag - the missing money often shows up later as 'extra charges' or goods held back.
- Get the quote in writing with what's included: packing material, loading, transport, unloading, and any tolls or floor charges.
Paperwork on moving day
- Get a signed inventory list of every item and box before loading starts.
- Ask for the lorry receipt (consignment note) - it has a docket number, both addresses, the truck number and the declared value of your goods.
- Never sign a blank or half-filled form.
Payments
- Don't pay 100% in advance. A small booking amount, then the balance at loading or delivery, is normal.
- Pay through traceable methods (UPI, bank transfer, card) and get a GST invoice.
- If something goes wrong, you can complain on the National Consumer Helpline (1915 or consumerhelpline.gov.in).
