The complete moving checklist
What to do - and when - for a relocation that doesn't turn into chaos.
3–4 weeks before
- Get a survey and quote booked so your moving date is confirmed on both ends.
- Start a room-by-room inventory - this is also what a mover will use to quote accurately.
- Begin using up perishables and items you don't want to transport (cleaning chemicals, gas cylinders, etc.).
1–2 weeks before
- Pack non-essential rooms first - guest rooms, storage areas, off-season items.
- Set aside documents, jewellery, and valuables to carry yourself rather than pack with the shipment.
- Confirm access at both addresses - lift availability, parking for the truck, any building permissions needed.
Moving day
- Keep a day-one box separate: chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items.
- Walk through with the team before loading starts to confirm what's moving and what's staying.
- Get the inventory sign-off before the truck leaves - this is your reference at delivery.
After you arrive
- Check the inventory against what's unloaded before the team leaves.
- Unpack essentials first, then work room by room rather than box by box.
